How to apply

Once you’ve chosen a course, the next step is to make an application through UCAS, the central processing body for higher education courses.

Our Undergraduate Applications page has a full explanation of the application process.

We strongly encourage you to come to one of our Open Days to get a feel for the University and its facilities.

Faculty application requirements

Each programme has their own entry requirements. Find out what we require from applicants below.

The selection process

You are advised to refer to the Guidance Page/FAQs before completing your UCAS form.

All applications must be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) by 15th October in the year prior to entry.

No more than four choices from the possible five available through UCAS should be used for medicine programmes. The remaining choices can be used for alternative courses (without prejudice to your application) when applying to Southampton. You may apply for more than one of our BMBS programmes (e.g. BM5 and BM6, or BM4 and BM5), but these would count as two choices for medicine.

For full details of the UCAS application process please visit www.ucas.com. Please note that there is an application fee

For BM(EU), all applications must be made through the Kassel School of Medicine at www.ksm-info.de.

BM(IT) students transfer into Year 3 having successfully completed the Advanced Diploma in Medical Sciences at the International Medical University in Malaysia.

Application stages

BM4 and BM5

Stage 1

Applicants are ranked by University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) score.

Stage 2

Applicants pre-screened against academic criteria.

Stage 3

Number of places available at Selection Day set. Candidates meeting the academic criteria, and with an appropriate UCAT score, invited for the number of places set.

Stage 4

Applicants attend Selection Day.

Stage 5

Performance at Selection Days reviewed alongside UCAT score and offers made.

Please note that the UCAT score of those applicants attending a Selection Day varies year on year, and as such it is not possible to give applicants an indication of the score that is required to attend a Selection Day.

BM6

Stage 1

Applicants pre-screened against academic and eligibility criteria.

Stage 2

You'll receive an eligibility form in November. You must provide evidence showing how you meet our criteria and return the form to us. You must meet three out of the six eligibility criteria. This form includes answering 3 questions. Your answers help us assess your suitability for the course:

  • Why is the BM6 programme at Southampton right for you?
  • What motivates you to study medicine?
  • Reflect on a challenging situation you've experienced: how will this help you as a medical student?

A panel of BM6 staff will review your answers against our criteria and decide who is invited to a selection day.

Stage 3

Applicants attend Selection Day.

Stage 4

Scores from Selection Days compiled and offers made.

Selection Days

Please note that not all applicants will be called to a Selection Day. Please be aware that the selection days form part of the selection process and being invited does not guarantee that an offer will be made.

Personal statements are used at the selection day. During a selection day you must show how you meet our non-academic criteria by demonstrating that you:

The selection process includes an interview and group task. If you're invited to attend we'll email you full event details two weeks beforehand.

Please note that the UCAT score of those applicants attending a Selection Day varies year on year, and as such it is not possible to give applicants an indication of the score that is required to attend a Selection Day.

Offers are made based on interview performance.

Further information on applying

For detailed information on our entry requirements and selection criteria please see our entry requirements page here.

Transfer applications

We are generally unable to consider transfer applications for any of the BMBS programmes.

Age

Due to early clinical contact, students must be a minimum of 18 years of age when they start our medical degree programmes. Applicants who apply but would be under 18 at the start of the programme will be considered for a deferred place or advised to reapply as appropriate.

Conditions of any offer made

You must be able to fulfill the duties of a doctor as stated by the GMC in their document Medical students: professional behaviour and fitness to practice (available here). Continued registration on the programme is conditional on satisfactory health screening and Disclosure and Barring Service Checks (DBS); as such, we seek to verify all applicant details against the Medical Schools Council database to ensure no fitness to practice findings have been registered against an applicant. The health screening is assessed in confidence by staff in University Hospital Southampton.

Criminal convictions

If you have any prior charges or criminal convictions you must declare this information on your application form; this includes both spent and unspent convictions, and also cautions and warnings. We may seek further information in line with the GMC guidelines, as stated in their document Medical students: professional behaviour and fitness to practise (available here).
