About us

Welcome to the Macmillan Survivorship Research Group

The Macmillan Survivorship Research Group is based within the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Southampton.

We are funded by Macmillan Cancer Support to conduct research into issues that affect survivors of cancer. Our research focuses on understanding recovery of health and well-being following cancer treatment and supporting self management of cancer related problems following treatment.

This is important because around 2 million people are living with or beyond cancer in the UK. This figure is rising by more than 3% per year. Increasing survival rates are to be celebrated but the experiences and needs of those who have completed their primary cancer treatment are relatively neglected. Health professionals may be unaware of who is struggling with problems. How to best assess problems faced or which interventions are effective in helping relieve or prevent problems following primary treatment are largely unknown.

With rising numbers of survivors the need to understand problems faced following treatment, how they are resolved, and how to support self management is becoming increasingly important for people affected by cancer, service planners and health policy makers.

We are part of the Cancer, Palliative and End of Life Care Research Group in the Faculty of Health Sciences.

The Macmillan Survivorship Research Group plays an important role in the activity of the NCRI funded Cancer Experiences Collaborative [CECo]
