New CD - Finnissy Works for Violin and Piano

Published: 27 October 2014

A new recording of the complete works (to date) for violin and piano by Southampton's Professor of Composition Michael Finnissy has just been released. 'Mississippi Hornpipes: Music for Violin and Piano by Michael Finnissy' features violinist Darragh Morgan and pianist Mary Dullea, and appears on the leading new music label Métier/Divine Art.

This is the eleventh recording of Finnissy's music on the Métier label. It demonstrates several different sides to his work, from encounters with the sonata - among the most venerable of Western instrumental genres - in his Violin Sonata, to experiments in combining instruments with assorted household implements, in 'Molly House'.

For the official launch of the CD, Finnissy will discuss his relationship to the history of the sonata at the Institute for Musical Research on 27 October from 5-8pm, at Chancellor's Hall, Senate House, London. His talk will be followed by a performance of the Violin Sonata by Morgan and Dullea, its dedicatees.
