International Honour for Music Academic

Published: 11 November 2014

At its most recent Annual Meeting in Milwaukee, 8 November 2014, the American Musicological Society elected Professor Mark Everist, of the Department of Music, to corresponding membership of the Society. Corresponding members of the AMS are those scholars ‘who have made outstanding contributions to furthering its stated object and whom the Society wishes to honor’.

The citation reads as follows:

The Board and Council [of the American Musicological Society] in this instance wish to honor you for your distinguished work as scholar of uncommon breadth and distinction. Your many publications on the music of 13th-century France, Mozart, and French music and theatre of the 19th century have shaped the way researchers study and teachers teach the music of all of these areas. We acknowledge as well your work as an editor, both of music, particularly of the Magnus Liber Organi, one of the foundational documents of Western music, and of word, as editor of the Journal of the Royal Musical Association, and as editor of the Royal Musical Association’s monographs series. And we note also your receipt of numerous awards, including the Westrup Prize, and from the AMS the Ruth A. Solie Award for the best collection of essays on a musicological topic (a joint award with Annegret Fauser), and the H. Colin Slim award.

Sixteen British members have been elected corresponding members of the American Musicological Society since its founding in 1937; there are seven living, of which five are retired, leaving Professor Everist is one of two only UK scholars active in British universities as corresponding members.
