Finnissy Premiere at the Proms

Published: 1 May 2015

A new work by Professor of Composition Michael Finnissy, commissioned by the BBC, will premiere at the Proms this summer. The BBC Scottish Symphony and conductor Ilan Volkov will perform Finnissy's Janne on 16 August at 19:30 at the Royal Albert Hall.

The premiere figures on a programme alongside two works by Jean Sibelius (1865-1957), the Symphony No. 3 in C major and the Violin Concerto. Finnissy's piece takes Sibelius's music as one of its starting points, and he has described Janne as a 'fantasy-portrait' of the Finnish composer.

The concert will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. Earlier on the day of the premiere Finnissy will join Andrew McGregor for a Proms Extra event at the Royal Academy of Music, to discuss the world premiere of Janne and introduce performances of Finnissy's chamber works. An edited version of the conversation will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 during the concert interval.

More information and tickets to both events are available from the BBC Proms website.
