Published: 26 May 2015

The Music Department are pleased to announce two new bursaries available to students beginning an MMus course in October 2015. The Barr Musicology Bursary will be awarded to a student beginning the MMus in Musicology; the Sirena Composition Bursary will be awarded to a female student beginning the MMus in Composition.

Each bursary is worth £1,000 pa, and may be retained if the student carries on to MPhil/PhD study, up to a maximum term of five years. Students should apply directly to the Chair of the Music Postgraduate Funding Committee, Prof Laurie Stras, by email at L.A.Stras@soton.ac.uk. The application should be in the form of a personal statement of no more than 500 words, outlining how masters’ level study (and subsequent doctoral study, if appropriate) fits into the applicant’s career plans or scholarly/musical development. The deadline for applications to Prof Stras is Wednesday, 15 July 2015. Students who have not already applied for a place on the MMus course should ensure that they fulfill the entrance requirements for the course, and should have completed the University application process at https://www.southampton.ac.uk/courses/how-to-apply/postgraduate-applications.page

The Barr Musicology Bursary

Awarding regulations:

A £1,000 bursary will be available for a postgraduate student studying a Masters course in Musicology beginning in the 2015-16 academic year. A student will be selected to receive the bursary via the existing selection committee in the Music department, which considers all eligible candidates. The bursary will be available to any student who has been offered a place on the MMus in Musicology regardless of nationality and fee status (UK/EU/OS).

Should the 2015-16 recipient of the award move on from the masters course to study a MPhil/PhD in Musicology at Southampton and the selection committee deem appropriate, the annual bursary will continue to be offered to the same student throughout their remaining years of study at Southampton (up to 4 years).

Should the 2015-16 recipient of the award not continue to further study, the 2016-17 bursary will be offered to a new postgraduate student beginning a masters in Musicology in the 2016-17 academic year. If this student continues to MPhil/PhD study, the bursary will continue to be offered to this student for a maximum of 3 further years.

If the 2016-17 student does not continue with further study, the bursary will continue to be offered in the same pattern as described above, up to the end of the 2019/2020 academic year.

The award can be combined with other scholarship or bursary funding available in the Music department, at the discretion of the selection committee.
