A University of Southampton Professor of Music and revered composer will be honoured with a conference at a London University in the new year.

On 19 and 20 January 2017 the Music Department of City University of London will present a two-day conference is devoted to the work of University of Southampton Professor of Composition Michael Finnissy, to celebrate his 70th birthday year.

The conference, 'Bright Futures, Dark Pasts: Michael Finnissy at 70', includes a performance of Finnissy's five-and-a-half hour magnum opus, 'The History of Photography in Sound' (1995-2002). Two further concerts will feature his complete works for two pianos or four hands, played by the composer, Ian Pace, and a diverse cross-section of Finnissy’s oeuvre.

Papers will consider Finnissy's work in the context of issues of marginality, sexuality, cinema, folklore, other composers, and performance. The composer will be present for the whole event, and will perform and be interviewed by Christopher Fox (Brunel University) on his work and the 'History' in particular.
