Event details

In the magical setting of the ‘Great House’ that Jane Austen regularly visited, Professor David Owen Norris and students from the Music Department will give a performance of music by Cramer, the only composer named in Austen’s novels.

Here is something quite new to me. Do you know it? Cramer.” Jane Austen, Emma (1815)

Professor Norris, and pianists from the Department of Music at the University of Southampton, will be presenting extracts from JB Cramer’s Studio per il pianoforte (London, 1804), perhaps the earliest set of specialist piano etudes. This is a unique opportunity to hear these pieces played on a Stodart Patent Compensating Grand Piano – an instrument familiar to Cramer – in the historic environment of Chawton House Library.

Some of Cramer’s music was owned by the character Jane Fairfax in Emma. Jane Austen was a keen pianist, practicing daily before breakfast so as not to interrupt the daily routines of her family.

David Owen Norris is a pianist, broadcaster and composer. His latest piano solo CD received a double-five-star review in BBC Music Magazine and he was referred to as ‘quite possibly the most interesting pianist in the world’ by the Toronto Globe and Mail.
