Facilities

Southampton enjoys extensive music facilities incorporating well-equipped teaching spaces and rehearsal rooms.

Music has substantial instrument collections, rehearsal spaces and practice facilities
A range of resources

Students have access to 18 practice rooms in addition to larger rehearsal spaces both within the department and at Turner Sims, as well as practice facilities in some of our halls of residence. Our electronic and computer music studios, completely refurbished and expanded in 2014, are state-of-the-art. Our department resources include a dedicated music computing cluster of multimedia workstations with music software including Sibelius and Logic Pro.

Our collection of instruments include a substantial range of keyboards with some outstanding period and modern instruments as well as practice instruments. We have a further collection of modern orchestral instruments and early instruments, which are available for loan to students. We also have two rehearsal rooms equipped with back-line amplification and drum kits for jazz and pop performance and a range of tuned and untuned percussion housed in the percussion rehearsal room.

The Hartley Library on Highfield Campus holds an excellent collection of music materials and has a dedicated Music Resources Room that contains CD, video and DVD holdings. The Library also holds the Norman Del Mar and the Anna Mahler collections. Students can also access facilities and expertise at Southampton’s world-leading Institute of Sound and Vibration Research and Web Science Institute

Students' Union

As well as being home to a host of Music organisations and societies, the Southampton University Students’ Union (SUSU), located at Highfield Campus, is the hub of the University social scene. It includes a 1,700-capacity nightclub (The Cube) and a 330-seat cinema.

The lecturers at Southampton are second to none; I have an amazing instrumental teacher and lots of performance opportunities, both within and outside the course. The campus and facilities are fantastic.
