Your tuition fees will usually cover compulsory course costs, such as field trips and laboratory clothing. A contribution may be necessary towards certain elements, these additional costs can be found on the course page.

Student loans

You can apply for a student loan to help pay for tuition fees if you live in the UK or a European Union country. You may also be eligible for a loan for living costs.

You will not have to pay your fees upfront.

If you live in England*, you can get a loan to cover your tuition fees. You will only start repaying this once you are earning over £21,000 per year.

Scholarships

Music Performance and Composition Scholarships 2020

Each year we offer up to ten Music Performance and Composition Scholarships to outstanding musicians with the potential to make a significant contribution to the department's musical life.

Each scholarship is worth £1000 in the first year of study, awarded via bank transfer at the end of semester 1.

Applicants are automatically considered for a scholarship through the interview-audition process.
The interview is with a member of our Music staff and may include a short performance (instrumentalists/singers) or a discussion of your portfolio of compositions (composers). Interviews will normally take place during Applicant Visit Days, though special arrangements may be made for applicants living at a distance or who are unable to visit for other reasons.

Conditions:

  • Music Performance and Composition Scholarship are open to UK/EU applicants only.
  • The scholarship may be used as you wish but it is contingent on you placing the University of Southampton as your firm choice and meeting the terms of the offer we have made.

Full terms and conditions are provided with the invitation to interview.

Further instrumental and vocal scholarships

Several Southampton churches offer choral and organ scholarships (NSAB.org, Cantores Michaelis), and most of the city's churches are ready to employ organists and singers on an occasional basis, especially for weddings and funerals, which are usually well remunerated. The Music Department also maintains close relationships with Salisbury Cathedral, Winchester Cathedral and Romsey Abbey. Organists and choral singers thinking of studying in Southampton should contact David Owen Norris to discuss the possibilities open to them.
