Condition Monitoring Event in Collaboration with the British Institute for Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT)

We are planning to hold a one-day Seminar/workshop on ‘Condition Monitoring of Tribological Systems’ in November 2011 jointly with BINDT. Experts in both academia and industry will be invited to give lectures/talks (volunteers are welcome) and researchers, students and industrialists who are working in relevant areas are encouraged to attend. This one day event took place here on Highfield Campus and featured presentations on current research highlights by representatives from each of our industrial clubs, as well as the opportunity to discuss ways of getting involved with nCATS. A forum for 1st and 2nd year PhD students from the relevant research groups within the School of Engineering Sciences to present their early work to academics and industrial sponsors, this event gives students the opportunity to experience what presenting at an academic conference is like, and to network with the community of sponsors that support their projects.

Corrosion Science Symposium (Southampton)

Organised by nCATS lecturer Dr Julian Wharton this conference brought together young researchers in the fields of corrosion science and engineering. The U. R. Evans Award was presented to Professor Philippe Marcus (Director of CNRS, Paris and president of the EFC).

Biofilms 4 Conference (Winchester)

nCATS lecturer Dr Paul Stoodley was on the organizing committee of this multidisciplinary international conference, chaired by Dr Jeremy Webb of the School of Biological Sciences. The session "Surface engineering and biofilm tribology" (Wed 1st Sep, pm) explores the impact of microbial growth on surfaces on industrial performance and health. Previous meetings have been attended by 300-400 guests including microbiologists, engineers and health care practitioners.

nCATS PhD Students Make a Splash at Spectra

nCATS PhD students joined the Spectra Roadshow on 13th March, an event to mark the National Science and Engineering Week 2010. The first roadshow event was held at the University of Southampton, succeeding events took placeasingstoke, Dorchester and Cheltenham.

nCATS Official Launch

The National Centre for Advanced Tribology was officially opened by VC Prof Don Nutbeam. Attended by almost 150, the guests and speakers included such distinguished names as Dr H.Peter Jost, Prof Duncan Dowson & Prof Gordon Higginson, as well as The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Southampton, Cllr Elizabeth Mizon.

RSC and nCATS Joint Symposium on Tribochemistry

Jointly organised with the School of Chemistry, this event featured talks by international keynote speakers from the field of Tribochemistry. Prrof Colin Bain of Durham University was awarded the prestigious RSC Tilden Lectureship .
