Supervision & progress

We believe that one-to-one contact with practicing researchers is the most important component of postgraduate education.

Finding a supervisor

More than 120 academic staff are involved in supervising our PhD students. You will be assigned a supervisory team who will mentor and guide the development of your research and your personal skills.

If you wish to develop a research programme with a potential supervisor, contact the individual directly to discuss the kind of projects we support and the possibilities for funding. You can find Ocean and Earth Science academics and their individual interests through the research groups pages. For joint supervision with other disciplines, links to these are under the University's faculties list. You can also download a complete list of potential Ocean and Earth Science and National Oceanography Centre Southampton supervisors from the link on the right.

Support and progress

All our new and ongoing postgraduate students can take advantage of our training programmes. This may include mandatory health and safety programmes. As a first year PhD student, you are also encouraged to attend relevant taught masters classes.

We expect you to take a high level of responsibility for your own progress. However, you will be working within a well-considered, accountable supervisory structure. This should help you to identify and manage any issues - academic or otherwise - that may arise during your research work.

You will probably have already met your supervisor as part of the recruitment process. As an expert in your chosen area of research, he or she will provide the primary source of guidance on academic content and methods.

Reporting and assessment

Your progress will be formally assessed at regular intervals through the programme. This is part of the assurance to yourself and your sponsor that you are progressing as expected.

As is usual in UK universities, you will register initially for an MPhil, and may then apply to upgrade this to a PhD.
