In the modern context of global warming, assessing the response of climate to CO2 forcing is a very big challenge, with numerous climatic feedbacks operating at different intensity and time scales. Key periods in the past, analogue of modern conditions exist during the early Pleistocene and Pliocene that are warm high-CO2 worlds. One most important parameter in the climate system is the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere that plays a role as a green house gas.

While the ice–core offers a high-resolution record of past pCO2 up to 800 ky, the boron isotope proxy in planktic Foraminifera offers the possibility to reconstruct CO2 beyond that record.

The input of this project is to carry on validating the boron isotope proxy at multiple sites on periods that overlap with the ice-core CO2 record, and reconstruct at high resolution atmospheric CO2 during the warm Plio-Pleistocene to assess the role of this green house gas and climate sensitivity in a warm world. A second part of the project will be to improve the boron analysis with the automation of boron purification and the improvement of sample throughput on MC-ICPMS.

Research project: Beyond the ice cores; orbital-scale atmospheric CO2 reconstruction of the Pleistocene using boron isotopes
