Research interests

The ocean carbonate system is a vital component of global climate, and climate change. Investigating past ocean conditions may improve our understanding of the current, and future, climates. The atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration is related to the acidity (pH) of the oceans, so by examining past ocean pH, carbon dioxide levels can be inferred. The boron isotope palaeo-pH proxy has been recently established using foraminifera, however there is a distinct lack of these zooplankton in the key Southern Ocean region. Diatoms are abundant in the Southern Ocean, and my work involves developing the boron isotope pH proxy for use with diatoms, therefore exposing a previously under-explored region for answers to climate change questions.

Project Title: Boron Isotopes in Diatoms: a Proxy for pH?
