My MSci 4th year project was titled “Analysis of Late-glacial Varved Sedimentation in Windermere, UK”. I was looking at one core retrieved from the mouth of Troutbeck on the eastern shore of Windermere's North Basin. Using spectral analysis of varve properties such as lamina thickness and grain diameter I identified several interannual hydroclimatic cycles which were tentatively attributed to known climatic oscillations.

This project was chosen based on my interest in rapid climate change- past and future- and also in Quaternary science.

Research project: Following on from my MSci project, my PhD involves a more detailed analysis of multiple Windermere cores.
Title: Seasonally resolved climate variability since the Last Glacial Maximum from the laminated sediments of Windermere

In addition to analysis of the laminae I also aim to provide a suitable chronology for the core set. Climate variations and long-term shifts should be set against similar findings from other locations including Greenland and Central Europe in order to give higher spatial resolution to European deglacial and late glacial climate change.
