Studying ocean and Earth science

The goal of our undergraduate programmes is to produce graduates who are well equipped to enter employment in not only a wide range of Earth or ocean science professions, but also in other spheres. Our courses are constructed around this goal, with emphasis on both academic merit and skills and qualities sought by employers. Accordingly, we offer courses that cover an extensive range of subjects, including theory-based courses and applied science, which provide the opportunity to work independently on challenging projects.

We offer a relaxed and informal atmosphere and a stimulating environment in which to learn and acquire skills relevant to a scientific career. Our staff contribute to current debates about geological, geophysical, oceanographic and climate change issues, and our innovative courses, delivered by leading experts in the field, characterise our degree programmes. We currently have more than 45 academic teaching staff (including 19 professors), and a strong technical and administrative support team.

We place considerable importance on generic skills, such as computing, communication, teamwork and problem solving. For these reasons our degrees are a passport to vocational and non-vocational careers alike. By following the research of world-class scientists in Ocean and Earth Sciences, students can keep pace with developments at the forefront of our knowledge of the Earth and its oceans.

As a result, we are highly rated by our students. In the 2015 National Student Survey (NSS 2015), many of our degree programmes achieved excellent results in teaching, enthusiasm for the course and how intellectually stimulating the courses are. Learning resources and facilities also achieved consistently high results.
