The Ian and Mildred Karten Memorial Lecture is part of the Parkes Institute annual lecture series and has been named to honour the generosity and interest shown by Ian and Mildred in the Parkes Institute.

Writing 'The Wolf in the Water' - a riposte to the Merchant of Venice

The Merchant of Venice is one of the most controversial of Shakespeare's plays; it can be played as a work of outright antisemitism, but it also contains the master's subleties and sophistications which make it more than simple anti-Jewish polemic.  The novelist and critic Naomi Alderman's play The Wolf in the Water - which follows Jessica, Shylock's daughter, 20 years after the Merchant of Venice - will be broadcast on Radio 3 on Sunday 22 May.  In this lecture, she will discuss how she came to write this riposte to the Merchant of Venice, and what she makes of Shakespeare's Jews.

Speaker Biography:

Naomi Alderman is an award-winning novelist and videogame creator.  Her novels include Disobedience and The Liars' Gospel.  She is co-creator and lead writer of the hit smartphone audio adventure Zombies, Run! Penguin will publish her new novel The Power in November.
