Both an undergraduate and an MA essay prize will be awarded annually for outstanding student work in the field of Jewish/non-Jewish relations. The award was inaugurated in June 2007 and the opening standard was truly remarkable. In the end three prizes were given. Second year student Tom Sharrad took the undergraduate prize for his outstanding essay: 'Representations of London’s East End Through Literature: Israel Zangwill’s Children of The Ghetto & Monica Ali’s Brick Lane', and the MA prize was split between Hannah Ewence, for her work on Jewish immigration and issues of gender entitled: 'The Impact of Immigration on the Jewish Male', and Diana Piopescu, for her work on Jerusalem: 'A literary transition from “longing” to “belonging”, confronting “the motherland”: the changing perceptions of the land of Israel'. Members of the Moss family and representatives of the Society of Women Writers and Journalists were there to take part in the award ceremony, and they also visited the collections and heard about the work of the Parkes Institute.
