Pathways in Jewish History and Culture (JHC)
An exciting new way to enable Humanities students to broaden their studies to include aspects of Jewish History and Culture as part of their degrees.
The Parkes Institute offers students the chance to follow a PATHWAY in Jewish History and Culture within the School of Humanities. This will suit students who have a special interest in aspects of Jewish/non-Jewish relations and who enjoy an interdisciplinary approach to learning.
While in your first year you will be covering a variety of core topics central to your discipline, from your second year you will have the opportunity to concentrate your studies in the field by taking Jewish History and Culture courses in History, complemented by those offered by a selection of other disciplines in the School of Humanities.
The University of Southampton with its world-renowned collection of archival and printed material contained in the Parkes Library offers one of the best research and teaching environments for students interested in Jewish history and culture, in Europe.
Alongside your instruction in this field you can enrol on language training courses in Hebrew and Aramaic as well as various modern European languages. You can improve these, and/or gain further experience by studying abroad one semester in your second year. We have Socrates partnerships with the universities of Wroclaw, Amsterdam, Paris IV (Sorbonne) and Caen. Summer courses in Yiddish are available in Paris and Vilnius or you could apply for a course in Hebrew at the Hebrew University in Israel.
In addition to transferable skills, the subject knowledge you gain by following the PATHWAY Jewish History and Culture will qualify you particularly for jobs in Holocaust Education, the administration of museums, archives, historical institutes and publishing as well as for many exciting careers taken up by humanities graduates in general. You also have the opportunity to further your academic studies by enrolling on the JHC MA at Southampton which prepares you for progressing to PhD.
