Putting students first

Published: 19 October 2011

PAIR (Politics and International Relations) are now running weekly tutorials for undergraduate students in their first semester of study at Southampton.

These are supervised and delivered by academic tutors. This unique and innovative system allows students direct access to a member of our full time lecturing/professorial staff on a weekly basis for the duration of the first semester. This can be a crucial time for students in establishing high quality relations with staff, and so the tutorial system makes sure that students have every opportunity to take advantage of the expertise that our staff can offer.

Tutorials are formally related to our two core first semester modules, Introduction to Political Systems and Introduction to International Relations. They are delivered in small groups (typically between 10 and 12) and offer students a chance to test out arguments, engage in debate and draw upon staff in order to improve their understanding of some of the most pressing domestic and international issues of the day.

This initiative is a part of PAIR's commitment to put students at
the centre of academic life during their time with us.
