Politics students launch a United Nations Association Youth Branch at Southampton

Published: 13 May 2014

Politics students Ollie Rooney, Tanisha Beebee and Rebekah Kulidzan, together with friends from other academic disciplines across the University of Southampton, have come together to form a local branch of the United Nations Association (UNA Youth).

“The United Nations still have an important role to play in global politics, we feel many students in Southampton would like to learn more about their work and discuss what’s happening in the world,” says Rebekah. “Our meetings are open to everyone interested in current affairs, not just politics students, all are welcome.”

The group was set up early in 2014 and is preparing for its official launch in the new academic year in September. The committee is drawing up a programme of events and plans to sign up some high profile speakers to give talks to students, staff and people from the community. They are already attracting interest from students in other Faculties and working with similar groups at Southampton including Lawyers Without Borders and Amnesty International.

The UNA Southampton committee members are Oliver Rooney (President), Lucy Rickett (Vice President) Tanisha Beebee (Treasurer), Rebekah Kulidzan (PR officer), Natasha Free (Secretary), Charlie Mason (Publicity Officer), Frank Andrews (Inclusion Officer) and Ani Choudhury (Liaison Officer).

Dr Kamil Zwolski, Lecturer in Global Politics and Policy, says: “This is an excellent idea and it fits very well with the strong International Relations programme at our University. We discuss the United Nations in various modules and this initiative will deepen our students’ understanding of this organisation.”

Dr Russell Bentley, Assistant Pro Vice-Chancellor adds: “The University has a long-standing relationship with the UNA and the newly established UNA-Youth branch on campus creates a fantastic opportunity for our students to connect academic work to the global challenges facing us all.”
