You will develop a detailed understanding of applicable techniques for research and advanced academic enquiry on this programme, while acquiring a substantial body of knowledge related to your academic discipline. You will develop a broad range of transferable skills, including the ability to conceptualise, design and implement a project, time-management skills, presentation skills and independent thinking. You will also be encouraged to write research publications and present the results of your work at internal research seminars and national and international conferences.

Entry requirements: Upper second-class honours degree or equivalent in engineering/physical sciences

Duration: Up to 3 years (full-time); up to 6 years (part-time)

Assessment: Submission of first report after 9 months; MPhil to PhD transfer report after 18 months; final PhD thesis after 36 months; viva voce at each stage

Start date: Throughout the year

Intake: 25–30
