Liz Payne is a Research Fellow in the Centre for Applications of Health Psychology, University of Southampton. She works on projects to develop and test digital and non-digital interventions which aim to help people to prevent or self-manage health conditions.

The understanding and application of psychology to healthcare interventions can help with communication and engagement, and improve the experience and outcomes for patients and professionals

Work in progress

I am currently working on the STREAM (Screen and Treat for Malnutrition) project, which is funded by a NIHR Programme Grant. The aim is to develop and test a mixed digital and non-digital behaviour change intervention for older people, to be delivered in primary care.

The focus of the project is to identify people who may be at risk of malnutrition, and offer treatment with dietary advice, oral nutritional supplements or referral to a dietitian, depending on people’s needs.

Qualifications

I completed a Doctorate in Health (DHealth) at the University of Bath in 2015. My doctoral thesis presented a mixed-methods study investigating “Continuity of care and its effect on patients’ motivation for cardiac rehabilitation”. This included a cross-sectional patient survey, development and testing of a model of interactions between continuity of care and constructs from self-determination theory, a Critical Interpretive Synthesis and a focus group study with patients and staff.

I have a BA (Hons) Humanities, a PG Diploma in Library and Information Studies, and I’m an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (MCLIP).

Previous work

I previously worked at Southampton Health Technology Assessment Centre (SHTAC) as a systematic reviewer, and as a Research Fellow in the topic identification team at NIHR Evaluation, Trials and Studies Coordinating Centre (NETSCC). I have carried out consultancy work as a researcher and information specialist. In this capacity I have contributed to a number of projects with NETSCC, the Medical Research Council (MRC) and other research groups and organisations. I am an experienced Information Scientist, and formerly ran the Information Resource Centre at the National Coordinating Centre for Health Technology Assessment (NCCHTA).

Research interests

I am very interested in the development of behaviour change interventions that improve people’s experience of healthy behaviour, as well as improving outcomes.

My particular interests include interventions that support older people to remain happy and healthy, nutrition for older people, and encouraging healthy behaviour after cardiac events.
