Hi, I'm Colin Hicks and I studied BSc Psychology within Psychology at the University of Southampton.

Since graduating I have progressed to the role of Associate Director and am now responsible for the primary care taking therapy services in Southampton and Dorset.

Q: Why did you choose to study at Southampton?

The university had a good reputation and when I visited I really liked the campus, the composition of the course and the staff team.

Q: Where do you work and what is your job role?

I work for Dorset HealthCare. After graduating from Southampton I completed a Doctorate in Counselling Psychology then came back to Southampton to work in the mental health services here. Since then I have progressed to the role of Associate Director and am now responsible for the primary care taking therapy services both in Southampton and across the county of Dorset. My role has taken me into a more strategic role looking at service design and delivery.

Q: Did you enjoy your time at Southampton - what memories stand out from your time here?

I had a really good time at the University and am currently working with the CBT centre at the University on a research project within the health service.

Q: What advice would you give to current students in order to help them get one step ahead of the competition?

Make sure you get the best degree possible. Always think about the applicability of your degree. I have a team of over 100 clinical staff and many have psychology degrees. The theory is great but what is really important is understanding its applicability in the real world. Nothing makes up for experience. It might not be glamorous but volunteering to undertake audits, work in administrative roles within services will give you good additional experience to go to employers with.
