Psychology achieves outstanding results in the Research Excellence Framework 2014

The University of Southampton is one of the UK’s top research universities, ranking 11th for the volume of its high quality research in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework.

The REF rated 84 per cent of Southampton’s overall research activity as world-leading and internationally excellent. Over 97 per cent of the University’s research environment and nearly 90 per cent of its research impact have been assessed as world-leading and internationally excellent.

The Psychology department has performed particularly well achieving 100 per cent in research activity rated as internationally excellent or of world-leading quality for not only the impact of our research but also for the quality of the research environment we provide to staff and students.

Overall, 80 per cent of our research activity has been specifically rated as internationally excellent or of world-leading quality. We are now in the top 20 of all Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience departments in the UK.

Professor Nick Donnelly, Head of Psychology comments, ‘The results of REF 2014 confirm, in particular, how the work of colleagues in Psychology at Southampton is impacting on the well-being of people across the world.’
