Hi, I'm Maria Adamou and I studied Statistics in Design of Experimentes within Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute at the University of Southampton.

During my PhD at Southampton I have had the opportunity to gain valuable experience by working with excellent statisticians and attend to international conferences where I presented my work and discussed with people about my research.

I am a 3rd year PhD student in Statistics, in the area of Design of Experiments. I've been awarded with the Mathematic Research Fellowship (MRF) from Mathematics to pursue a 4th year of study so I expect to graduate by October 2014.

The statistics group is so supportive and friendly and you feel that you belong in an academic family where everyone put their effort into wanting you to succeed. My supervisors are always available to help and advise me.

I've been given the opportunity to improve my teaching skills by undertaking demonstrating duties for several undergraduate modules for different groups with different backgrounds.

After I graduated from School of Applied Mathematics and Physical Sciences of the National Technical University of Athens and completed an MSc in Applied Statistics at University of Oxford, I considered the University of Southampton the ideal place to pursue my PhD in the area of Design of Experiments, owing to its excellent international reputation in the specific research domain. The Statistics group is amongst the leading groups in the UK in the terms of research and expertise.

My aim is to pursue an academic career and I believe that the University of Southampton will ensure my development as a research statistician. During my studies I have the opportunity to do my research in the area of optimal design in a demanding and competitive academic environment, establish a good publication record and gain experience how academia and industry can collaborate.

The Highfield Campus provides a range of social and leisure activities to do. There are cafes, restaurants and bars where we meet our friends and have a break or going out for a drink after a demanding day at the office. Also once I arrived at the University of Southampton I became member of the Jubilee Sport Centre which offers a wide range of activities. I enjoy going to the fitness classes with my friends where I can relax, have fun but mainly get fit.

Studying is important, but so is having fun. Southampton is very much a student-friendly city, with many things to do and closed to very popular destinations so you are able to organise one day trips during the weekends. I would definitely recommend the University of Southampton to prospective students and especially to those who want to study Statistics since it offers great opportunities to students to pursue a thorough study in Statistics. I believe that the University of Southampton is the best choice to achieve that.
