NMR

NMR spectroscopy is a powerful analytical tool: by combining a wide range of 1D and 2D NMR experiments the assignment of functional groups, atom connectivity and 3D molecular structure can be undertaken.

What is NMR Spectroscopy and what is it used for?

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a key analytical technique used in many areas of chemistry for the characterisation of small and large molecules and assemblies and for the identification of individual constituents of complex mixtures.

State-of-the-art facilities

The Chemistry NMR spectroscopy facility has solution NMR spectrometers operating at 400 and 500 MHz that are used to underpin a vast array of research topics e.g. for organic chemistry, chemical biology, inorganic and supramolecular chemistry.

Clients

For most SMEs, the cost of investment in expensive large equipment is prohibitive and the use of the analytical facilities within Chemistry at the University of Southampton allows them to undertake high-level scientific research.

SCAS has developed a strong research support function in NMR spectroscopy for clients outside the University sector including companies in the pharmaceutical industry, custom synthesis houses and other universities.
