The political and cultural legacy of the Victorian period was both far-reaching and enduring.

Content

We may think of the Victorians as belonging to a far distant past and a very different world, but in many of their interests, achievements, ideas and anxieties they anticipate modern times. Using examples from novels, poetry and non-fiction, this talk will explore some of the ways in which the Victorians are not so remote from us after all.

Why is this important?

The political and cultural legacy of the Victorian period was both far-reaching and enduring. Apart from being fascinating in itself, an appreciation of that legacy also helps us to understand more about Britain in the 20th century.
