Materials Diffraction

Powder X-Ray diffraction is traditionally used to describe the technique of structural characterisation of polycrystalline materials. In recent years this definition has been increasingly extended to include analysis of more complex materials and non-diffraction techniques such reflectivity. It is now possible to routinely collect data on thin films, epitaxial systems and engineered materials and devices yielding such information as texture, thickness, stress etc.

A range of equipment is available managed as the Powder Diffraction Small Research Facility in Chemistry.  This includes initial phase identification of powder samples and characterisation of more complex systems such as thin films. The equipment is all recently installed, state of the art and complimented by a range of data analysis software.
