Links with Industry
Industrial Links

The School has strong links with the UK aerospace industry and government research laboratories, in particular Airbus, BAE Systems, Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL), Qinetiq, Rolls-Royce, as well as overseas organisations such as the European Space Agency. In addition, close links with the motorsport industry provide plentiful opportunity for students to pursue a career path in this related high-technology field.
The School also fosters close collaboration with a number of industry partners, examples of which include the Advanced Technology Partnership with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI ATP), the Lloyd's Register of Shipping University Technology Centre (LR UTC), Rolls-Royce UTC and Airbus UTC.
Support for research and projects
Our research activities, along with many student projects and group design projects, are of direct relevance to industry and, indeed, much of it is funded, in whole or in part, by industry.
Industrial Advisory Board (IAB)
We aim to ensure that our courses respond to the needs of employers through feedback from senior industrialists on our advisory boards.
Sponsorship and Placements
Many of our students are sponsored and we endeavour to help students seek sponsorship by maintaining a register of those companies and organisations that have provided support and training for our students in the past. These include BAE Systems, VT Group, Lloyds Register of Shipping, MoD/DSTL, British Maritime Technology,W.S. Atkins, Burness Corlett & Partners, R.N.L.I. and Frazer-Nash Consultancy. Students often wish to find summer work placements in industry, while this is not a mandatory requirement of the degree programmes, we encourage students to undertake this valuable experience and provide help and support as required.
Services to Industry
We provide a range of services to industry, primarily through the School's Research Institute for Industry (RIfI) and its constituent Advisory Units. For example, The Wolfson Unit for Marine Technology and Industrial Aerodynamics has over 35 years of experience in providing a consultancy service in ship design, yacht design, small craft design, naval architecture, marine technology and industrial aerodynamics, supplying innovative research to a world wide customer base.
