FAQs
Font
Is the font family Freight going to be made available?
No. This is a commercial font and should only be used on glossy / professionally produced marketing materials. For all in-house publications / materials please use the substitute system fonts (Georgia and Lucida sans) which are available on your PC.
When should I use Georgia?
Georgia is used in internally produced documents, and should be used for main headings, PowerPoint (main text), templated address details on letterheads, email signature and the web.
When should I use Lucida sans?
Lucida sans is used in internally produced documents, and should be used for the body copy of letters, memos, faxes, agendas, minutes and reports etc. It should also be used for captions and tabular text in PowerPoint presentations.
Logo
Should I use the University of Southampton logo as well as the School logo on my materials?
No. The School of Engineering Sciences logo should be used on its own for all School related documents/materials. It should appear in the top-right corner of printed publications and on-screen applications, including websites.
Where do I obtain the School logo from?
The logo can be downloaded from this page. Research Group secretaries, course secretaries, school office staff and marketing also have copies.
Are .eps versions of the logo available (for professional printing)?
Yes. They are available for download from the top of this page.
Is there a specified size for the logo?
Yes. On A4 format: 60mm; On 170 x 240 format: 60mm; On business cards: 40mm; Minimum size: 30mm. To change the size of the logo, edit the properties of the image by right clicking on the image and selecting 'format picture'.

You should save the templates to the appropriate storage location on your PC:

Do this by selecting Tools, folder options in XP or Organise, folder and search options if you are using Vista, then click on the view tab to select show hidden files and folders.

PowerPoint Presentations
Are the PowerPoint templates available in any other format?
Yes. If you use Tex, LaTex or Open Office, the Communications Team hope to make electronic templates available in these formats shortly.
Can I use a black background on my slides to display images / video clips?
Ideally you should use the background as provided in the template, however Communications recognise that for teaching purposes or specialised research topics for example, you may need to adapt the presentation but please ensure you retain the integrity of the brand.
School Stationery
Do I have to have new business cards printed? I have plenty of my old 'dolphin' ones left.
Yes. The School has agreed to cover the cost of all business cards which are being re-printed due to the implementation of the new brand.
Conference posters
Is there a standard template for conference posters?
No, not at the moment, but they will need to be in brand. It is hoped that a standard template/guidelines will be developed in the near future. The Cartographic Unit can offer you advice on producing research/conference posters in brand.
Teaching materials
Do I have to change my teaching materials over to the new brand PowerPoint templates/document guidelines?
If your teaching materials currently include the dolphin logo, please remove this and replace with the new School logo. You may wish to consider gradually moving your teaching materials over to the SES Brand PowerPoint template.
Website
I have my own/project website, does this need to be in brand?
Yes. At the very minimum please ensure that the dolphin or SES logo is removed and replaced with the new logos. The logo should be positioned in the top right corner of the web page. Verdana should be used as the main font for your web pages, with Georgia used for headings.
Are CSS templates going to be made available to enable websites outside of the content mangement system (CMS) to be changed over to be in brand?
Yes, hopefully. More information will be posted up on this as soon as it is available.
When will the SES website be changing over to the new brand?
By the end of 11 February the SES logo will be carrying the new logo. The process of changing the site completely over to the brand will take place over the next 9 months.
