Safety Policy

The policy of the School of Engineering Science is to provide and maintain safe and healthy working conditions, equipment and systems of work for all its staff and students. To this end, information, training and supervision is provided as necessary.

Responsibility is also accepted for the health and safety of other people who may be affected by the School's activities.

Risk Assessment 2009/2010

Please be aware this is a new Risk Assessment Form for 2009/10. Please ensure that you read the new guidance notes prior to completing the Risk Assessment form. This is particularly important for those who use Microsoft Office 2003

All School activities must be assessed for hazard and evaluated for risk. An assessment that identifies a significant hazard should be recorded in writing, and the measures needed to control the risk to health and safety should be listed. Risk assessment forms and guidance notes may be downloaded from the link provided on the right. Further guidance on how to do a Risk Assessment can be found on the HSE website (link on the right).

Group Safety Officers will check, approve and sign completed assessments of activities, which take place in their areas. Student project risk assessments will first require the approval of the relevant Supervisor. Risk assessment records will be held by the School Office.

Risk assessments and safety rules for specific areas and activities are displayed or are readily available in the area where the activity takes place. Risk assessments are reviewed annually, or when experiments or activities are re-configured or modified. If significant new hazards are identified, the risk assessment will be revised to deal with them and will be submitted for approval.

Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH)

When chemicals or substances hazardous to health are used or generated, the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations require that you risk assess the materials and put in place control measures to minimise the risk of injury or loss. The COSHH assessment also deals with emergency procedures and disposal arrangements.

A COSHH assessment form can be downloaded from the link on the right and for further advice please refer to the University Safety Office.
