Operations in Tunisia focus on the restoration of desert and semi-arid habitats including the reintroduction of flagship species within the country’s network of protected areas. We seek to understand the effectiveness of conservation action in these erratic environments, while addressing the need to manage fragmented populations and the challenges of sustaining wildlife alongside livestock.
MRes projects will evaluate the effects of habitat protection and restoration on local biodiversity, and understand the ecology of reintroduced species (scimitar-horned oryx, dorcas gazelles, red-necked ostrich). This includes impacts of recently established populations on the environment and their interactions with carnivores and other taxa. Prospective students will need to be proficient in Arabic and / or French and will be expected to work closely with national park Conservateurs and Gaurdiens, sharing skills and knowledge to enhance local capability.
Projects available (Band B)
The project costs include field work in Tunisian protected areas. Travel from UK airports, within country travel, accommodation and meals, and use of a fieldwork vehicle are all covered (students will be required to make their own way to and from UK airports).
