The Faculty of Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton is the co-signatory with Network Rail (NR) to the Strategic University Partnership (SUP) in Future Infrastructure Systems.
Fundamental and applied research underpins many recent technical developments in the rail industry. The SUP undertakes a programme of research projects addressing the Infrastructure Asset theme of the Network Rail Technical Strategy. Projects are led by members of the rail systems research group at the University, which has one of the largest engineering and environmental science groups in the UK with an outstanding ability to provide an integrated, whole systems approach to engineering challenges.
The aims of the partnership are
- to build on fundamental research carried out at Southampton,
- to lead and support Network Rail in track and substructure related research and development
- to ensure that the potential benefits are realised by carrying this through into practice
The focus of the partnership is to support, complement and build on fundamental scientific work in the area of railway track and infrastructure systems by:
- developing new fundamental scientific understanding into a form that can be used in practice
- extending and enhancing relevant fundamental scientific studies
- enabling field monitoring to provide specific examples of problems and understanding of real behaviour
- introducing new knowledge into practice, through engagement with NR staff
