Chairman of Laird plc (2014-) and the two Government companies set up in 2014 to manage contracts and payments under the electricity market reform programme (the Low Carbon Contracts Company and the Electricity Settlements Company). Independent Chair of the Remuneration Consultants Group (2010-) and non-executive director of Lloyd’s (2009-) and the UK Government Efficiency and Reform Board (2010-). Trustee of the Hampshire Technology Centre (1990-) and member of the Council of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre (2010-) and of the Cambridge University Library Visiting Committee (2007-).

Group Chief Executive of Logica (1993-2007).

Non-Executive Director of Invensys (2009-2014), Aegis Group (2009-2013), British Airways (2000-2009), Siemens Holdings (2008-2009), Boots (1999-2006), ASDA (1996-99), Southampton Innovations (1999-2003). Senior Advisor Candover Partners (2008-2009), HCL (2008-2012) and Actis (2011-2013).

Member of the CBI President’s Committee (2004-2007) and International Advisory Board (2007-2010). Independent Director of the Department of Trade and Industry Strategy Board (2005-2006).

Led the UK Government Reviews on the operational efficiency of back office operations and IT across the public sector (reported 2009) and management information (reported 2012).

Earlier executive business career: Overseas Containers Limited (subsequently P & O Nedlloyd Containers) (1974-1981); International Paint (Courtaulds) (1981-1985); GEC Marconi (1985-1993, 1991-1993 as Group Managing Director, GEC Marconi Radar & Control Systems Group).

Other former interests: Member of the Board of Portsmouth Housing Association (1993-2007); Trustee of Southern Focus Trust (formerly The Portsmouth Housing Trust) (1992-2000); Trustee and Director of Shelter (2004 - 11); Member of Corporation of Highbury College, Portsmouth (1989-1999). Member and Trustee of the National Council for Universities and Business (2000-14, formerly the Council for Industry and Higher Education).
