The Green and Roberts marshalling schemes along with the BarLink scheme provide students with an unrivalled opportunity to gain first-hand insights into the work of leading judges and local barristers. Previous successful applicants have benefited from the opportunity to spend time with barristers and judges, to attend court, to discuss cases and to attend ceremonial events.
Southampton Law School is delighted that students can benefit from these opportunities provided by alumni of the university and local barristers. This, alongside the many other opportunities provided by the Law School, is another demonstration of the strong networks of alumni throughout the legal world that Southampton Law School enjoys.
The Schemes are open to year 2 and final year Law Students.

Read moreWork experience with Sir Nicholas Green in the High Court (Corporate and Commercial), supported by a £625 bursary. Up to two placements will be awarded. Open to all second year students.
Sir Nicholas is a former academic having lectured at the University of Southampton and the University of London. He was called to the Bar in 1986 and appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1998. In 2013, he was appointed a judge of the High Court (Queen’s Bench Division). In October 2018, Sir Nicholas was appointed a Lord Justice of Appeal. Sir Nicholas previously served as Chairman of the Bar Council and the Advocacy Training Council.
Work experience with Dame Jennifer Roberts in the High Court (Family), supported by a £625 bursary. Up to two placements will be awarded. Open to all second year students.
Dame Jennifer Roberts was called to the bar at Inner Temple in 1988 and has been a judge of the High Court of Justice Family Division since 2014. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Southampton and an honorary doctorate in 2017.
The requirements for all schemes are as follows:
Year 2 students at Southampton Law School should submit a document of no longer than 500 words beginning "I want this opportunity because…', also detailing Year One modules and grades on a separate page (not included in the 500 words). Applications should be emailed to Dr Michail Risvas with the subject title "Marshalling application".
Written submissions will be reviewed by a Law School selection panel, who will select applicants for interview.

Students who are seriously intending to go to the Bar have the opportunity to be twinned with a Barrister specialising in criminal law, employment law, family law or housing law.
The programme is run collaboratively with Barristers from a local Chambers. 12 College Place, and has proved to be very successful as well as popular. It represents a fantastic opportunity for students to gain an insight into the day-to-day work of a barrister.
To apply: Students submit a short written application to the Law School in the Autumn which is then reviewed by a selection panel. Applications should be emailed to Jan Steele (J.Steele@soton.ac.uk) with the subject title "BarLink".
