Our Thermo Scientific X-Series 2 ICP-MS is a general purpose collision cell ICP-MS. It is used primarily for elemental concentration determinations in a wide variety of sample types providing information for many scientific disciplines. It is used for screening as part of our isotope purification procedures and performs a teaching/training role as new users are introduced to the facilities.
This instrument is simple to use, robust and capable of rapid analyses of most elements in the periodic table. It has a collision cell that is used to improve the analysis of elements that suffer from interferences (e.g. Fe). It is housed in a purpose built clean laboratory along with our other ICP instruments. The instrument can be run in solution mode, for liquids and digested samples, and also connected to one of our laser ablation systems.
The analyses of element concentrations are a vital part of our research within the geochemistry group. Examples of the work carried out on this instrument include:

In addition to carrying out analyses to support research projects across University of Southampton and through our collaborators around the world, we also undertake bespoke analyses on behalf of commercial partners.
We have a group of expert scientific and technical staff who are happy to engage in confidential discussions and provide quotes for interested users.
We are always looking to extend our research portfolio and welcome enquiries from potential collaborators, especially those seeking support for post-doctoral fellowships.
