Hi, I'm Maria Newbery and I studied within Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute at the University of Southampton.

My first degree was an MA in History from the University of Copenhagen, followed by a post-graduate MA in Museum Studies from the University of Leicester. Following a 25-year career as a museum curator, I am now a first year PhD student working part-time under the joint supervision of Dr John McAleer (History) and Dr Helen Paul (Economics). I continue to work part-time as a museum curator and I was the lead curator in the development of Southampton’s new maritime museum, SeaCity.

The aim of my research project is to quantify and analyse the seaborne trade of Southampton during the period 1772-1815.

Research into the history of shipping and maritime trade in the eighteenth century tends to focus on overseas trade, London or the needs of the Royal Navy. This project will supplement the sparse research into the trade of individual provincial ports. But it will also deepen our knowledge about Southampton and its local economy in the eighteenth century.

The key source materials that I am using are weekly lists, published by The Hampshire Chronicle (est. 1772), listing named ships, masters and routes. Since the Hampshire Chronicle does not include many details about tonnage or cargoes, and Southampton's Port Books and Customs Records have not survived beyond 1773, I will need to find key information from other sources, such as Lloyds Lists and Port Books from other ports trading with Southampton in this period.

Cross-faculty and multidisciplinary support is crucial to my project, as I will make use of advanced econometric techniques as well as geodata analysis methods to analyse the data.
