Hi, I'm Sarah Westbury and I am a Leverhulme Trust Doctoral scholar with the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute at the University of Southampton.

I joined the University of Southampton as a Leverhulme Trust Doctoral Scholar in 2015. As a member of the SMMI, I benefit from expert supervision across the disciplines of History, Archaeology and Ship Science. My research is concerned with the cultural, political and professional ideologies that shaped the restoration of HMS Victory in the early twentieth century.

Supervised by Dr Christer Petley (History), Professor Jon Adams (Archaeology), Professor Dominic Hudson (Ship Science), and Dr Jon Downes (Ship Science), my research seeks to shine new light on HMS Victory’s restoration and curation in the 1920s. I am particularly interested in how the restoration, and early visitor experience, were influenced by popular imperialism, navalism, and contemporary ideas about race and gender.

I previously studied at Durham University, graduating with a BA (Hons) in Ancient, Medieval and Modern History (2011), and an MA in Museum and Artefact Studies (2012). Formerly a Collections Management Assistant in the V&A’s Furniture, Textile and Fashion Department, I currently work part-time as a Museum Assistant for Hampshire Cultural Trust.
