Derek McGhee, Professor of Sociology, has been made a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts (RSA).

Professor McGhee, Head of Social Sciences, has been honoured by the RSA in recognition of his contribution to Sociology.

Originally founded in 1754, the RSA is an enlightenment organisation committed to finding innovative practical solutions to today’s social challenges.

Speaking about his award, Derek said, “I am deeply honoured to have received this acknowledgement of my contribution to my discipline, Sociology. I am very much looking forward to being an active fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. They are a very old and progressive Royal Society; they are the catalyst for a wide range of innovative social and cultural projects that correspond with a number of my research interests.”

Professor McGhee’s research, predominantly funded through the Southampton-based Centre for Population Change, supported by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), covers a wide range of social issues including migration and criminology. Much of his work is focused on examining a number of public policy themes such as muscular liberalism, contemporary secularism and post-secularism, community cohesion, integration, counter terrorism and human rights policies, and religious identities in the public sphere.

Professor McGhee’s recent work has examined the impact of migration on Polish families in the UK, with a particular focus on education, migration locations, access to social housing and managing family relationships. He is also conducting research into the role of non-government organisations in asylum seekers and irregular migrants.
