On Monday June 22nd, a one-day workshop on Prospects for Citizenship took place featuring academics from the University of Southampton, talking on citizenship, democratic innovations, diversity and integration.

Award shortlist success

Dr Clare Saunders has been shortlisted for the British Journal of Sociology Prize. The prize is to be awarded biennially to a paper, published in the BJS, which in the opinion of the judges, makes an outstanding contribution to increasing sociological knowledge.

Alexandra Kelso has just had a new book published by Manchester University Press, entitled Parliamentary Reform at Westminster. This is Dr Kelso’s first book, and is the result of extensive research on the Westminster Parliament and attempts to reform it over the past century.

Globalisation, development and underdevelopment

Dr Ben Selwyn 's research focuses on causes and consequences of development and underdevelopment in the global south. He undertook his PhD research in North East Brazil where he investigated how relatively inexperienced and lowly capitalised firms achieved international competitiveness (thus leading to employment generation and capital accumulation) and how these processes impacted upon the regions work force. He has written several articles on these subjects.

What motivates citizens to engage in the making and delivery of policies that affect their lives? We know that increased community engagement can increase social capital and have a significant impact on public policy outcomes such as low crime and reduction in anti-social behaviour, more cohesive communities, environmental improvement and better local democracy. But we are constantly told that this is an age of growing disillusionment and disengagement with politics. Is it possible to reverse these trends and promote civic behaviour?

£5 million grant for new research centre to understand population change

The University of Southampton's School of Social Sciences is to share in a £5million grant over five years to create a new Centre for Population Change. It will explore the issues surrounding migration, fertility and ageing including the implications for society of migration both within and beyond national borders.
