Where would social sciences be without maths?

Graham Crow, Professor of Sociology at the School of Social Sciences, has recently acted as chief advisor to Diane Hofkins who was commissioned by the ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) to produce an education poster entitled Where would social science be without maths?’

This poster has been produced for teachers to use within the classroom and depicts a timeline of prominent figures in social sciences, along with accompanying teachers’ notes.

Professor Crow says "This project will promote an appreciation of the crucial role played by maths in the development of the social sciences. It describes how key social scientific figures such as the anthropologist Francis Galton, the economic historian Robert Fogel, and the sociologist Emile Durkheim used maths in their analyses of topical social and economic issues. It also shows how the work of these pioneers has opened up the research agenda for today’s social scientists."
