Postgraduate taught programmes in Sociology and Social Policy

We offer the following postgraduate taught degree programmes:

ESRC recognition

Our MSc Social Policy and Social Research and MSc Sociology and Social Research have been designed as Research Training master's programmes and have received recognition from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).

Candidates applying for these programmes are eligible to apply for funding to the ESRC studentship competition for 1 + 3 studentships comprising one year's funding for the master's programme and a further three years' funding (subject to satisfactory progress) for work on a research degree. It should be noted, however, that we are not currently in receipt of any ESRC 1 + 3 quota awards, so all applications for 1 + 3 funding would be entered into the open competition.

Our programmes are also recognised by the ESRC for the award of part-time studentships (fees only) over a period of up to seven years. Candidates should note that in order to be eligible for MPhil/PhD funding from the ESRC a recognised research training master's programme must first be undertaken. The MSc Sociology and Social Policy is not recognised as a Research Training master's and offers a more flexible programme of general study, combining elements of both Sociology and Social Policy.
