New lecturer in demography appointed
Dr Jakub Bijak has joined the School of Social Sciences as a lecturer in demography
He studied Quantitative Methods and Information Systems at the Warsaw School of Economics and later took a post at the Central European Forum for Migration and Population Research in Warsaw.
Dr Bijak spent two years working for the United Nations War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague. His role involved researching migration and population consequences of the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia, involving several visits to the area. He said: ‘Over four years, 100,000 lives were lost in Bosnia and Herzegovina alone and many more people were forced to flee their homes. Understanding more about what happened in the Balkans through the experiences of refugees, displaced persons and those who lost their relatives is crucial. We found it very important for many people that their stories could have finally been told.’
He is a member of the School’s Centre for Population Change and is also currently teaching undergraduates about population processes.
