Choosing a postgraduate programme
The MSc in Demography provides vocational training for professional demographers and quantitative social policy analysts and promotes interdisciplinary study in the field of population science. Graduates from this programme will be equipped to undertake quantitative analysis to support social policymaking locally, nationally and internationally in the health and social care professions, market research, local and national government departments, international organisations and the many other agencies that require a sound social statistical basis for decision-making. To join the programme it is expected that you will have the equivalent of at least a second class honours degree with some exposure to statistical methods, e.g. Geography, Psychology, Sociology, or Politics. Degrees in Statistics, Mathematics, etc. are also acceptable.
The MSc Social Statistics (Research Methods Pathway) serves to meet the research training needs of researchers applying social statistics methods in, for example, demography, market research and geography. It is expected that you will have the equivalent of at least a second class honours degree with some exposure to statistical methods, e.g. Geography, Psychology, Population Sciences, Sociology, Politics. Degrees in Statistics, Mathematics, etc. are also acceptable.
The MSc Social Statistics (Statistics Pathway) serves to meet the research training needs of postgraduate researchers in social statistics methodology. It also provides vocational training for professional social statisticians. It is expected that you will have the equivalent of at least a second class honours degree with a substantial statistical theory component, e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Econometrics, etc.
The MSc Official Statistics is a modular programme which is designed to be undertaken on a part-time basis. It is primarily suited to statisticians employed in UK government.
The MPhil/PhD research degree is for students who have successfully completed an MSc programme at Southampton, or its equivalent elsewhere.
If you are accepted to study for a PhD you may also apply to join the European PhD programme in Socio-economic and Statistical Studies. This is an interdisciplinary qualification characterised by the wide disciplinary range of material covered, which involves spending at least two periods during the four years of the programme studying in different partner universities elsewhere in Europe. The periods of study abroad may involve taking courses or carrying out supervised research (or both), and may in certain cases be carried out under the ERASMUS European student exchange scheme.
