AAPG Imperial Barrel Awards Prague - Southampton MSci students highest ranking undergraduate team!

Published: 8 March 2014

Congratulations to this year's AAPG Imperial Barrel Award team - Alice Wenborn, Suzanne Millis, Sam Bunnett, Ben James and Chris Wilkinson who, on the 7th March, placed 5th in the European Regional Competition in Prague.

In an extremely closely fought competition featuring 26 teams from throughout Europe, they Southampton geology and geophysics MSci students were the highest ranking UG team, beaten only by four Petroleum Geoscience MSc teams. A fantastic achievement widely praised by both industry representatives in attendance and their peers.

Dr. Mark Vardy who accompanied the team commented 'Ranking so highly amongst teams of specialist petroleum geoscience students is a credit to both, the students for all their hard work and late nights, and the degree progammes here at Southampton. They and us are obviously doing something right.'

Mark also asked us to mention and pass on his thanks to all those members of staff who offered advice and expertise over the last few weeks. In particular John Brooks, who as always has been the life force behind this year's IBA competition.

Personally I found the IBA course the most rewarding and useful thing I have done at university, the opportunity to use a real data set and work it up like you would in the industry was a really great experience and obviously the chance to compete in Prague was awesome.

Ben James - MSci Geology Student

Competing in the IBA was a fantastic experience. I really enjoyed working with an industry standard dataset and learning new skills and techniques to make our interpretation.
