Frequently Asked Questions
A number of queries have frequently been raised with the SS18 organisers. Below you will find these questions and answers to them. Please read this before submitting your own query.
How many abstracts can I submit?
There is a limit of two submissions per participant, which we take to mean that if a participant has written two abstracts and will be delivering two papers (one individual, one co-authored) that is their limit. However, we understand that some participants will be involved as convenors or discussants in thematic panels, for which they will not submit abstracts, therefore being a convenor/discussant only would not count as one of the two permitted submissions.
The online submission process asks me to 'Upload a File' - do I have to submit my whole paper at this stage?
No, the upload refers to a PDF of your abstract only. We will not be asking you to submit the whole paper to the SS18 organisers at all.
My abstract is in Microsoft Word format - how do I convert it to PDF format?
If you are a Mac user, you can simply save your Word/Pages file as a PDF. If you’re using a Windows-based PC, there are plenty of programs which are free, easy to download and easy to use (e.g. PDFill, CutePDF) which will convert Word documents to PDF. If you search for these programs on Google, you will have no problem downloading and using them.
If I am presenting a paper as part of a Thematic Panel, do I have to submit my own abstract for this?
No, it is the responsibility of the panel Convenor/chair(s) to coordinate the submission of abstracts by all individual contributors. Contributors should send their abstracts to Convenors, and the Convenor(s) will then submit all individual abstracts on the online form for ‘Thematic panels’, together with the general overview abstract (900 words) for the whole panel. The overview should be entered under 'Abstract', and the ‘Panel Contributions’ fields are where the convenor should enter the participants details and abstract. Please read our page on Thematic Panels.
If I am presenting a paper as part of a Thematic Panel, do I still have to register myself as a participant?
Yes, you are still responsible for creating a SS18 user account. If your proposal is successful, you will use this account to register and pay for the conference in February 2010.
Can I apply for financial assistance to attend SS18?
We are currently not in a position to offer any form of financial assistance to participants, and so you will need to seek support from other sources. However, if there is sufficient funding available at a later date we will make an announcement on the website.
