In association with Winchester School of Art, the Green Shopper initiative runs exciting events which give people the opportunity to create their own bag out of recycled material.
Green Shopper was launched as part of the University of Southampton's Multidisciplinary Research Week 2013, and was accompanied by two fascinating talks on sustainable consumption lead by leading academics and researchers at the university.
The initiative is inspired by an entrepreneurial group of women from the Gioto Garbage Slum, Nakuru, Kenya- who developed an ingenious sustainable way to earn money by creating purses and handbags from recycled plastics (known as the Nakuru Women's Plastic Recycling Business).
Created by Alison Simmance from the Multidisciplinary team, Green Shopper allows you to create your own eco-friendly shopping bag from recycled material. Old University of Southampton campaign banners are used as the material with the ethos to create a long-lasting legacy of sustainability within the University.
The Green Shopper sessions allow attendees to try out their creative side, in a fun and energetic activity. At the launch, 15 people became green shoppers by designing and sewing their own personalised eco-friendly bags - and together they helped to reuse approximately 15kg of material, 15kg of which would have gone to landfill.
Get Involved
In August 2013, Green Shopper was held at a parent and carer event which saw 7 people making their own bags out of recycle university banners over lunchtime.
