Winners of the 2015 Sustainability Action Awards

Congratulations to the students and staff winners at this year's Sustainability Action Awards!

More than 80 people attended the ceremony on Tuesday 17th March, which was a celebration of sustainability work taking place across the University, in the local community and further afield. Professor William Powrie, the University’s sustainability champion, introduced the ceremony and Professor Adam Wheeler (Deputy Vice-Chancellor) and Beckie Thomas (SUSU’s Vice President Welfare) presented the awards.

This year there may strong applications - a sign of how much good work is going on in this field across the University. Winning projects ranged from carbon saving projects on campus, through to social enterprises and economic development projects, representing the full spectrum of sustainability at the University.

Winner of the Outstanding Student Award: Sarah Muskett

Sarah spent summer 2014 empowering 22 churches in the South of England to embed sustainability into church life as a major community organisation already set up to 'Think Global, Act Local'.

Winner up of the Outstanding Staff Award: James Leeming

As University Catering Manager, James identified and delivered on opportunities to reduce the energy costs of vending machines on campus, saving money and the associated carbon emissions.

Joint winners of the Outstanding Student Team award: SanEco

SanEco is a social enterprise project providing better access to clean sanitation and hygiene to over 6,000 men, women and children in 2 regions of Kenya.

Joint winners of the Outstanding Student Team award: Right Light

Right Light provides a more sustainable source of fuel to rural communities in Kenya, providing a better source of income, improving health, and children's access to education.

Winner of the Outstanding Staff Team award: Joulo Project

Joulo created a low-cost device to provide people with better understanding of the home heating and advice on how to reduce energy costs, with project rolled out to over 2,000 households, and across the Highfield campus.

Winners of the Outstanding Student and Staff teams award: Try before you buy

'Try before you buy' created an exemplar sustainable synthetic chemistry research laboratory to trial new equipment, include sustainability into the curriculum and empower colleagues to try new approaches to their area of research. 

More details to follow on the winners and runners up of the awards. The awards will soon by on display in the Hartley Library with a short explanation of each winner’s work.

The Sustainability Action Awards are supported by the University's Carbon Management Fund - a £4 million investment in ideas that will reduce the institution's carbon emissions and improve the sustainability of our campuses.
