Autumn/Winter 2010 at Turner Sims brings a wealth of unique (and we don’t use that word lightly!) performances. Only at Turner Sims can you enjoy the fascinating poetry of Edith Sitwell, set to music by William Walton in Façade, (28 September) performed by the Aurora Orchestra with Kit and the Widow, produced by Turner Sims.
Other rare concerts include performances by acclaimed Southampton born soprano Sally Matthews (7 October) and the astonishing Finn Peters’ Music of the Mind (25 November), using state of the art technology to transform the musicians’ brainwaves into music – you can hear what they’re thinking!
In our Orchestras Live series we join with BBC Radio 3's Discovering Music programme to present a Bach Brandenburg Day (24 October), examining the complete Brandenburg Concertos of JS Bach with the Academy of Ancient Music and Richard Egarr. These two recordings are free to attend, but tickets must be reserved from the Turner Sims Box Office.
Seminal American composer Terry Riley is 75 this year. On 2 November he plays one of just five UK concerts with tabla player Talvin Singh and saxophonist George Brooks, performing California Kirana – the West Coast Legacy of Pran Nath.
Turner Sims is also one of the few places to see pianist Jonathan Biss (30 November) performing pieces by Janáček, Beethoven and Schumann before his concert at the Carnegie Hall; New York.
We’re really proud of this season’s programme of concerts to suit families (with children from 5 years). The Family percussion concert (21 November) performed by O Duo is a mix of popular classics and accessible contemporary music played on two marimbas, vibraphone and a huge array of percussion. On 30 January, the family strings concert features the Elias String Quartet, recently voted Newcomer of the Year in the prestigious BBC Music Awards 2010.
Turner Sims is a creative partner with many of the musicians who appear at this intimate, well-loved venue. As well as supporting excellent new work, it’s important to us that we are able to offer audiences free tickets try something new thanks to the Never Seen Live and Cavatina Chamber Music Trust schemes, see our brochure for full details.
